Uruguay Sees Slight Decrease in Crime Rates, Homicides Remain Stable

Uruguay has experienced a slight decrease in crime rates, with fewer reported cases of robbery, theft, and cattle rustling compared to the same period last year. However, the number of homicides has remained relatively stable, with 274 cases recorded between January and September of this year, the same as in 2019. This figure represents a decrease from the 275 homicides reported in 2023.

Minister of the Interior, Nicolás Martinelli, has celebrated the "new decline in all crimes", highlighting the positive trend in crime statistics. He emphasized that this is the first time since the return to democracy that a government has managed to break the upward trend in crime rates. Martinelli attributed the decrease to a combination of factors, including increased police presence and community engagement.

While homicides have shown a slight decrease of 0.4% compared to the same period in 2023, Martinelli described the overall trend as "stable" and "on a plateau."
